Dispatch From a Quiet Basecamp

It’s been a month since the last build trip participants returned home from Mexico. This time of year, we usually host hundreds of people each weekend. But right now our basecamp is eerily quiet.

In fact, the streets of Puerto Peñasco are empty too. Even the Malecón, home to all those waterfront restaurants and bars, is a ghost town. Local police are enforcing a strict curfew, limiting traffic to only the most essential activities in order to stop the spread of COVID-19.

So our 1MISSION staff in Mexico – like the rest of our team in the United States – are stuck at home. As we shared with you last week, Susana and her sewing students have gotten creative in a hurry, making over one thousand masks in their own homes.

New house construction is now on hold as well. But during the week before the curfew went into effect, our local construction crews continued working on houses already in progress. Because families living in substandard housing are at greater risk of disease, our crews were eager to finish as many houses as possible.

Like you, we’re doing our part to limit the spread of the coronavirus. And we continue to pray for everyone around the world who has been impacted, including those who have lost jobs as a result.

We know that one day – hopefully before too long – it will be safe to resume construction of new houses. Our sewing and gardening classes will gather once again. And we’ll start welcoming build trip participants back to basecamp. Please consider a gift now to ensure we’re able to resume construction as soon as it’s safe to do so.

On behalf of the families we serve, thanks for partnering with 1MISSION over the years and for sticking with us now.
