We’re a community development organization giving people in poverty the opportunity to earn a house by serving their community.
We are committed…
To the field
We see families and communities as active participants in their own development, not as passive recipients. We strive to train, equip, and empower local residents, leaders, pastors, and organizations to lift each other out of physical, spiritual, and emotional poverty. We concentrate our efforts on long-term sustainable solutions.
To our people
Our volunteers and staff are our most valuable assets for accomplishing our mission. Our highest priority is to encourage, support, and empower our team members to reach their full potential and abilities. Our leaders are committed to leading by serving.
To serving
The leaders of 1MISSION are Christ-followers. Our overall vision and mission are driven by our commitment to modeling Jesus' passion for serving the poor. We serve all people regardless of religion, race, ethnicity, or gender.
To our donors
The resources available to us are entrusted from God through our donors, therefore we demand of ourselves high standards of professional competence, financial accountability, and an overall commitment to excellence. We are committed to outcomes and measurable results.
What is community development?
Community development is a process. It’s a process in which neighbors link arms with neighbors to find local solutions to local problems.
Community development is about entire neighborhoods being raised out of poverty. Forever.
Yes, community development involves money. But even more important, it involves people’s skills and abilities and passions. It sees each man, woman, and child as a whole person—body, soul, and mind—and invites them to participate holistically in the process of transformation.
Where does housing fit into all this?
Poverty is complex and multi-dimensional. So simplistic, one-dimensional solutions won’t cut it. But housing actually plays an outsize role in addressing the root causes that keep families trapped in poverty.
Consider this: Kids who grow up in houses with solid, concrete floors are more likely to finish school. A house with a door that locks and a roof that keeps out the rain means families stay safer and healthier. Families in safe, secure housing are able to focus on better job opportunities, prioritizing their family’s future rather than merely trying to survive each difficult day.
Building houses alone isn’t enough. But as part of a holistic community development strategy, it plays a vital role.
